Dementia JAM Card

The award-winning JAM Card (Just A Minute) allows people with dementia or other communication barriers to ask for just a minute of patience when they need it.

Dementia JAM Card

The Dementia JAM Card, for people living with dementia / memory problems, is a discreet way of telling people that they may sometimes need a little extra time and patience.

The Dementia JAM Card is available from Dementia NI free of charge. Adopting the durable original business card format, members of Dementia NI also requested the inclusion of a key fob, so that they will always have the card with them on their travels. A JAM app is also available for smartphone users.

The Jam Card was originally developed by NOW Group for people who have learning disabilities and autism. Dementia NI adapted it for people who are living with dementia and memory problems. It is also available as a key fob and a mobile app.

Dementia NI sends out Dementia JAM Cards only to people who are living with dementia or memory problems. This is not confirmation by Dementia NI that you, or your loved one, has a diagnosis of dementia.

JAM Card Awareness Training

JAM Card Awareness Training provides organisations with the knowledge they need to ensure that users of the JAM Card feel welcome in their establishment. If a business is “JAM-Friendly” they will display the JAM-Friendly sticker. You will see it displayed on all Translink vehicles and stations, in the Belfast City Hall, Belfast City Airport and in the SSE Arena.

We want to encourage all customer-facing businesses (large and small), venues, transport providers, local councils, etc to become JAM-Friendly. This just gives anyone with any communication barrier a little more time and understanding if you get a bit stuck! If you are out and about, please tell people about the card and direct them to the NOW Group to find out how to become JAM-Friendly. Visit https://jamcard.org/ for further information.

Dementia NI members actively spread the word about living with dementia and promote the use of the Dementia JAM Card. In recent years members participated in ‘Dementia Divis’ is a podcast film produced by ‘Kids In Control’ as part of a project pairing young people from Divis Youth Project.

The project funded by the Big Lottery ‘Awards For All’ was facilitated by physical drama group ‘Kids In Control’ with the support of local Dementia NI members and hopes to promote greater awareness around the very relevant issue of dementia within society.
