Call Dementia NI 028 9693 1555

Back in November 2024, the Age Friendly Co-ordinator for Ards and North Down Borough Council brought colleagues to meet Dementia NI members and presented their plans for the proposed sensory garden. They brought architect's sketches and ideas for materials for fences, ground tiles, lights, sculptures, and fountains etc. They were there to ask our members for feedback on what would and wouldn’t work for them, and others with a dementia diagnosis, and what they would like to see.

Our members explained that they would like an enclosed space with a description of what it is, and who it is for, at its entrance, with one clear entrance/exit needed so as to avoid confusion. A good number of benches would be important, and the ground should be a simple surface material that wasn’t slippy when wet or that might have a confusing design. They also suggested to have scented flowers and herbs so it is for all senses, and would prefer a fountain or water feature rather than an art sculpture.

The council were very receptive of the members' ideas and were able to get the majority included in the final garden. The council kept Dementia NI updated throughout the process and invited us to the launch where Bangor and Ards member Rodney James got to cut the ribbon. All Bangor members were invited to a walk in the garden in July and loved being able to see their ideas brought to life.
