Dementia NI invite people living with dementia to join their new empowerment group in Holywood. The 3rd group now to be established by Dementia NI, will enable people with dementia to have a voice and remain active within their community.
Group members meet every fortnight and support each other through friendship and understanding, particularly after a recent diagnosis.
Commenting on the new groups being formed, Programme manager Tara Collins, says,
“Dementia Empowerment Groups are being set up in each health trust area across Northern Ireland. At present we are encouraging individuals with a diagnosis of any type of dementia who reside within the South East Trust catchment area, to join their local group. We are delighted with our progress to date and have received huge support throughout Northern Ireland.”
The Dementia NI Holywood group will support the South Eastern Trust service provision for those with dementia.
Brenda Arthurs, Assistant Director in Primary Care & Nursing, South Eastern H&SC Trust welcomes the opportunity,
“The South Eastern H&SC Trust recognises the need to make improvements in dementia care across Northern Ireland. We are committed to providing high quality services for our local population and are actively involved in the development of the Regional Dementia Pathway. We welcome the opportunity and look forward to working with Dementia NI.”
Group members help influence how people can live well after diagnosis, raise awareness by telling others what life is like to live with dementia, and inform organisations on how to make their services, policies and practice more suitable for people living with dementia.
Through our groups, we hope to :
- Provide friendship and understanding
- Maintain group member’s abilities and communication skills
- Provide social engagement
- Alleviate boredom
- Improve mood
- Utilise and develop existing skills
- Network with relevant people who can improve the lives of people with dementia in Northern Ireland
Anne from Newtownabbey, a recent member to a local Dementia NI group, would encourage those with dementia to avail of the upcoming offering in Holywood.
