Meet the Members!

Hi, I’m Rodney, a passionate sportsman, photographer, angler, and a member of Dementia NI living in Comber. Following a diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia during the pandemic, I joined Dementia NI to help me adjust to my new reality and continue living life to the fullest.
It started when my wife noticed changes in my memory and every day tasks. It was a difficult time, but receiving the diagnosis was a relief as it helped me understand what was happening to me.
I’ve been passionate about fitness my whole life. I was lucky enough to play alongside George Best during my school days. Watching him with a football at his feet was something else - he was untouchable! Football is my world, and I played for clubs like Ards & Crusaders, I still fancy myself to do a good job at centre back for any team.
I played football until I was 42, and I still find ways to keep fit today. I love walking with my dog everyday, getting out to take wildlife photographs, fishing at Hillside Fishing Club, and taking on physical challenges that keep me focused. Being active daily helps me manage my symptoms and gives me a sense of purpose.
Dementia NI has been a fantastic support for me since my diagnosis. I attend the Newtownards group, and it has given me the confidence to share my story and meet others who understand what it’s like to be in the same boat.
Staying active and connected has made a huge difference in my life.
For me, it’s about making the most of every day. I want others to know that life doesn’t stop with a dementia diagnosis. With the right support, it’s possible to keep doing what you love and find joy in new challenges.
By helping raise awareness and vital funds for Dementia NI, you’re helping people like me and so many others across Northern Ireland. It all helps to challenge the stigma, support vital services, and create a more inclusive society for people living with dementia.
My son Colin spent 24 hours pushing a 100kg sled up and down the length of the Invictus Gym in Dundonald. His efforts and the support of the community, friends and family, allowed him to raise a phenomenal £6,000 to support the work of Dementia NI and we are so proud of him.
