Dementia NI members

Dementia NI membership is specifically for people with a diagnosis of dementia.

If you're living with a diagnosis of dementia and would like to become a Dementia NI Member, ask your GP or other health professional to click the button below and complete the referral form on your behalf. New members require confirmation from Memory/Care services or their GP/Consultant that the provision offered by Dementia NI will be suitable for their needs.

To get the most out of our organisation, an individual must:

  • Feel comfortable and able to participate
  • Be able to communicate effectively and comfortably within a group setting
  • Be able to manage personal and self-care needs independently

Referral for Membership applies to:

  • Individuals in the earlier stages of dementia progression
  • Individuals with any type of dementia
  • Individuals with a diagnosis of dementia regardless of adult age
  • Individuals who are aware of their diagnosis and willing to discuss what life is like living with dementia

There are different options to become a member of Dementia NI. A Dementia NI Empowerment Facilitator will discuss these options during initial contact with the individual living with dementia.

Supporting someone with dementia

Whilst Dementia NI membership is specifically for people living with a diagnosis of dementia, families and informal carers can also benefit. Dementia NI staff are available to ensure they too are receiving the right support by signposting to relevant services and carer support.

Family and carers of Dementia NI members report that they can relax and make time for themselves when their loved one is partaking in Dementia NI activity, and often observe an improvement in mood following the participation. Family members are also included in some activities and kept up to date with Dementia NI’s work. This has also opened doors and opportunities for family members, and some have built friendships with each other.
